CHAPPELL HILL WATER SUPPLY CORPORATION Water Tariff
SECTION 4- DROUGHT CONTINGENCY PLAN
The following plan will be implemented by the Corporation to conserve water during times of drought and to insure uninterrupted service during those times.
The Corporation has two operating wells:
No. 1 – Drilled in 1967 to a depth of 750 feet. Pumping capacity: 45-50 gallons per minute.
No. 3 – Drilled in March 2008 to a depth of 450 feet. Pumping capacity: 103-107 gallons per minute.
Combined pumping capacity - 148-157 gpm
24 hour theoretical maximum pumping volume – 213-226 thousand gallons. However, in practice, if the pumps are running continuously for 24 hours, the pumping efficiency drops off to about 87% of the maximum, so that only about 187,200 gallons per 24 hours can actually be realized (practical maximum).
Stage 1 Conservation (moderate)
When the 24-hour pumping volume reaches 75% of the practical maximum 24 hour volume (140,000 gallons) for three consecutive days, Stage 1 Conservation measures will be implemented. These measures include:
1. Voluntary conservation requested.
2. Letter sent to customers
Stage 2 Conservation (severe)
When the 24-hour pumping volume reaches 80% of the practical maximum 24 hour volume (150,000 gallons) for three consecutive days, Stage 2 Conservation measures will be implemented. The measures include:
1. Automatic yard irrigating- limited to once a week.
2. Outside watering – includes hand-held sprinkling, vehicle washing, washing down sidewalks and pads-Watering is restricted to “odd-even” days. Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday are “even days”; Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday are “odd days”. “Odd” and “even” are assigned by last digit of street address.
Stage 3 Conservation (extreme)
When the 24-hour pumping volume reaches 85% of the practical maximum 24-hour volume (160,000 gallons) for three consecutive days, Stage 3 Conservation measures will be implemented. These measures include:
All outside watering banned.
